Abstract/Summary:
With the tremendous amounts of 3D data available, the geoscientist is often faced with an overload of information. Stacked datasets are not the only data type being used. Complex trace attributes and AVO have yielded a multitude of different volumes that could add value. However, the sensitivity of these volumes to reservoir parameters is not always clear and therefore multiple volumes are often needed to support ones work, making these tools cumbersome. Clearly the focus needs to be on getting direct ties to the subsurface properties that are most meaningful. This can be accomplished by looking at rock property contrast volumes. The Density Cube is the result of a three-parameter non-linear AVO inversion to contrasts in bulk density, compressional velocity and shear velocity. This technology is now being used to streamline the efficiency of prospecting for drillable hydrocarbon targets and aid in the understanding of key lithologic and fluid relationships. Key advantages include reduced cycle time, improved success rate and identification of economic vs. non-economic hydrocarbon saturations. Examples range from the prospecting phase of our jobs, to complex visualizations of the subsurface around producing fields.

Biography:
Chuck Skidmore, Vice-President of Geoscience Applications for Emerald Geoscience Research Corporation, received a bachelorâs degree in geology from S.U.N.Y at Buffalo (1986) and a masterâs in geology from the University of New Orleans (1988). His professional career started in 1988 with Amoco Production Co. where he worked in all areas of exploration and production. In 1993 Chuck moved to Amocoâs Research Center where he was involved in the worldwide application and teaching of amplitude based technologies. As the VP of Geoscience Applications for Emerald, he has continued the development and application of new amplitude technologies and has been an invited speaker at many symposiums and technical meetings.
